The St. Louis Lions have announced the addition of four NCAA Division I players to their 2008 roster. Joining the team this summer will be Creighton’s Tim Walters (Lafayette HS), University of Illinois-Chicago’s Matt Spiess (Chaminade Prep) and St. Louis University’s Calum Angus and Kyle Patterson.
Tim Walters, a two-time all-state forward at Lafayette High School began his college career at University of Kentucky and then transferred to Creighton for the 2006 season where he appeared in 14 matches. In 2007 Walters played in 20 games for Creighton registering 12 points.
After redshirting his freshman year at University of Illinois-Chicago, forward Matt Spiess played 25 games in 2007 recording five goals and three assists. Spiess was a four-time letter winner at Chaminade College Prep in St. Louis where he scored 34 goals in 2005 and was selected to the NSCAA/Adidas High School All-America Team.
Kyle Patterson, a native of Birmingham, England, led St. Louis University in scoring in 2007 with 10 goals and four assists.
Calum Angus returns to the Lions after playing in the final two games of the 2007 season recording one assist in 116 minutes played. In 2007 Angus anchored a SLU defense that was number one in the Atlantic 10 allowing just 13 goals in 19 matches. Angus played in 17 of the Billiken’s 19 matches in 2007, scored two goals, was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year and named to the NSCAA All-America Team.
All four players are expected to be available for the season opener in Des Moines on Saturday afternoon and for the Lions’ home opener at the Tony Glavin Soccer Complex on Sunday night against Colorado.
