What a great feel good story!

FENTON — For CBC's Jake Bond, it was the perfect finish to an emotional junior soccer season.

Bond came off the Cadet bench Saturday night to score the lone goal as the Cadets defeated St. Louis University High 1-0 in the Class 3 championship game Saturday night at Anheuser-Busch Center.

"Not a likely goal-scorer, but he was the right guy at the right place and he made the most of it,'' CBC coach Terry Michler said. "He lost his mother (Mary Ann, to cancer) in August, just before the start of our games, so I'm really happy for him.''

With about 11 minutes to play in the first half, Bond received a pass from senior reserve Vic Lombardo and scored on a rising shot to the short side.

"Vic did a great job of getting me the ball,'' Bond said. "It seemed like the goalie was leaning a little, and I hit it well. I definitely felt my mom was with me tonight. All this was for her.''

With the victory, CBC (26-4-3) wins its seventh soccer title and the sixth under Michler.

So what does six titles mean to the winningest high school soccer coach in America? It means his teams are .500 in championship games.

"I'm even now — six wins, six losses,'' he joked. "Seriously, each one is special because each one involves a different group of kids. For this group, it means an awful lot because they were anointed as champions before they ever played a game this season. They worked their way to the top, dropped off a little and then found a way to get back to the top.

"We played a perfect game tonight. In terms of what we had to do in order to win, I could not have asked for any more than we got from these guys. We made a few moves and we completely shut down SLUH. And we were able to do it without having to compromise in what we were trying to do in terms of the attack.''

CBC was in control from start to finish, getting superior play from seniors Sam Carenza, Austin Tierney and Sean Kuster.

The loss ended SLUH's season at 21-7-1.

"We got beat,'' Junior Billikens coach Charlie Martel said. "We got outplayed tonight. They were stronger, they were faster and they were the better team. Give all the credit to CBC, but I also want to say how proud I am of our team.''

Martel said that CBC's tight marking on SLUH's outside midfielders all but eliminated the Junior Bills' attack. SLUH's only real scoring chance came with just under 28 minutes to play as Matt Reda's shot from the left side of the box bent just past the far goal post.

CBC keeper Drew Duncan posted the shutout without recording a save.

The third-place game, between Hickman and Park Hill, finished in a 1-1 draw.

The tradition continues 40 years after CBC won the first official State Championship and 10 out of the 14 districts before that. Congrats to all involved!

Guess my former Vianney and SLUH friends will start talking to me again in a week or two.

Go CADETS!!!

This week's STLsoccer.net Player of the Week goes to CBC High School junior forward, Jake Bond. Jake netted the goal that gave the Cadets a 1-0 win last Saturday night over rival St. Louis University High to take the Missouri Class 3 State Title. Jake took a nice pass from senior midfielder Vic Lombardo deep on the left side of the SLUH box and knocked it in near post. It's the seventh state title for CBC, tying Vianney for the most in state history.

Find a Way to Win

A conversation on managing
great team performances with Terry Michler,
America’s All-Time Winningest High School Soccer Coach

by Dan Coughlin

The Game led to The Conversation.

In searching for powerful insights to improve group performance it’s important to always stay open-minded to every possibility. On November 21, 2009, I took my eight-year-old son, Ben, to see the Missouri Class 3 Boys State High School Championship game. I wanted him to see soccer played at a very high level. Little did I realize what was going to happen starting that night and continuing over the next few weeks.

The game was won by the CBC (Christian Brothers College) Cadets 1-0, but much more than that was the way they won. It was the single finest display of soccer I’ve ever seen at any level including collegiate and professional. CBC displayed a relentless intensity of passing, attacking, moving without the ball, and winning the ball back for the entire eighty minutes. Every player was in sync with each of his teammates.

We sat in the first row and barely heard the players talking. They seemed to know where to go and what to do spontaneously. They had no wasted effort or activities. It all resulted in a precise, attacking style of play where every member fulfilled his responsibilities offensively and defensively in a remarkable manner. It was like watching a world-class jazz ensemble performing at their highest level. The other team was a very good team and had beaten CBC twice earlier in the season, but they could barely make two passes in a row and never had a shot on goal throughout the championship match.

When I got home that night I sent a congratulatory e-mail to Terry Michler, the head soccer coach at CBC. He and I had met briefly 20 years earlier and I just wanted to congratulate him on one of the most amazing group performances I’ve ever seen in athletics, business, education, or entertainment. I didn’t think he remembered me, and I certainly didn’t expect a reply.

…and then the magic started to happen.
