JUST returned from Iowa and lets just say though they are very good st theresa is no sure thing to defend the state title with there 3 notre dame commits , purdue and possible ucla commits...St. joe almost upset them #12 just missed on two occasions once in sudden ot ...the iwa /aquinas match was a classic ...aquinas scored with about 10 tp iwa tied it on a free kick with less than a minute and won it in first couple of minutes of ot iwa # 22 Iffrig left with injury. iwa tie vs des moines probalbly will keep them from becoming # one in nation...back to St theresa they had 2+0 and 3-1 leads but des moines came back to tie match before losing 4-3 in final minutes....the word of the day was WIND ...ST JOES IWA AND FTW ALL WON 2/3 MATHCES WELL DONE

After a long weekend and some absolutely amazing soccer, here are the results. You will see all game results, followed by a breakdown of points earned per round. For example if you look at St. Joseph's breakdown you will see that they got 5 pts in rd 1, 0 in rd 2, 4 in rd 3 for a total of 9. Points were awarded like this, 3 for a 1, 1 for a shutout, up to 3 pts for goal differential.

Zumwalt West and IWA both finished with 11 pts, but since there was no head 2 head game, the next tie-breaker was a goals allowed.

All in all, I was very impressed with all teams that participated. The fact that every team lost a game shows the balance of the event. Having been involved with this now for a year and seeing all of the teams, here is my honest and unbiased assessment, ranked from 10 down.

10. Racine Horlick was the weakest team of the bunch, mainly because they just don't have as many horses as the rest of the teams. They are 2-3 players strong, like the majority of all High Schools are, just not enought to win in this event.

9. Brookfield Central played 50 strong minutes against Aquinas and never really got it together the rest of the weekend. The potential is there, but not sure what was up with them all weekend, most difficult team/coach/parents to read.

8. Bettendorf High was without a doubt a major surprise, probably won a game they shouldn't have and lost a game they probably should have won. It was prom night for them on Sat., so my guess is that half of them were worried about hair appts, nails, etc. Can't blame them though.

7. Glendale High survived their IWA loss to rebound with 2 big wins on Sat, including Coach Jeff Rogers 200th career girl's victory. These kids flat out refuse to give up which is what I like so much about them.

6. West des Moines Valley proved that they can play with some of the elite teams in the nation. Junior Whitney Sharpe (#6) who has commited to UCLA is the real deal. Could have gone 3-0 on the weekend or 0-3, that's how close their games were. They had the toughest schedule of games.

5. St. Joseph's Academy plays a lot of young kids and are scrappy as all get out. Very good defensive team that is waiting for their offense to catch up. Gave St. Teresa's everything they wanted and more. This team has a chance to be special in the future and if teams now take them for granted, they will get it handed to them.

4. Ft. Zumwalt West is a very good team. Never quite got it going against Aquinas, possibly a small letdown from the night before. Proved they belonged with this group of teams without a doubt. The difference between them and St. Joe's is Mautz, at least that is my opinion.

3. St. Teresa's Academy is without a doubt the most inconsistent team of the event. For 40 minutes against FZW, they looked unbeatable, but something didn't click and they weren't the same the rest of the weekend. Fowlkes is a very good player and hits a pill with either foot. The have the offensive firepower to score goals, but can't afford to give up 3 goals in game to good teams. They have the potential to make it 3 titles in a row.

1B. IWA is a very nice squad with a lot of talent. Ashley Brazill hit without a doubt the best shot of the event on a direct kick from about 30 out against Aquinas with very little time left that was far post upper 90. Keeper never move and had no chance even if she did try. Even though they beat St Thomas Aquinas today, It is my opinion that they are a small notch below. That being said, to go through 2 OT's and a shoot-out and two hours later come out and knock off the #1 team in the nation is impressive.

1A. Tournament champions St. Thomas Aquinas has it all. Size, speed, ball skills, coaching, attitude, etc. They were a fun team to watch mainly because they had no weak spot on their team. Every player had excellent skills, they are the real deal.

The players, coaches, fans, were all absolutely phenominal this weekend . I am looking forward to the event already. Ask the St. Louis teams about Fun City and the soccer Complex. Burlington is without a doubt a great place to hold the event

Looking at your posting....was wondering why IWA didn't receive 1 point for the shootout against West DesMoine? Did I miss something? That one point would put them in a tie with Thomas Aquinas and not Fort Zumwalt West.

the only way a team could get any points in a loss was if the 2 teams played to a scoreless tie prior to the shoot-out. In this case, IWA gave up a goal during regulation play, thus they received no points. The only time a team actually received any points in a loss was Brookfield Central received 1 point after playing to a scoreless draw with St. Joseph's before going to a shoot-out. Hope this clears things up a bit.

Awesome weekend! I thought the best games were IWA v. West Des Moines Vally, IWA v. St. Thomas Aquinas, and Fort Zumwalt West v. St. Teresa's.
