Puma Kings,
The Lions Roster is not set at this time. We still have a lot of guys going thru the league registration and we are prohibited by rules from releasing player names until they are cleared by the USL, USSF and International clearing houses.
When we do announce that a player is playing with us it is an indication that they are cleared.
Look for us to have a big announcement day in April to announce all of the players. |

Unfortunately I was not. I wanted to see the matches but I was out of town all weekend.
The updates that I recieved from this past weekends matches were positive.
The Lions played Lindenwood to a 0-0 draw. Tony states that he was happy with the improvement in play and the quality on the field. Teh changes that were made paid off.
On Sunday the Lions beat Washington University 3-1 in a very very good game. I am am trying to get the details on Leonardo's goal but from what I heard it was a cracker.
More players are arriving this week so we should see the quality continue to improve, pace of play and strt to see what the team will look like for the season.
We have a player coming in from South Carolina this weekend and all scouting reports indicate he can score in bunches.
He will see some playing time this weekend when the Lions play in Columbia MO. |

NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ST. LOUIS LIONS BEGIN FIFTH SEASON SATURDAY MAY 15th AGAINST REAL COLORADO
St Louis, MO...The St. Louis Lions begin their fifth season Saturday, May 15th 5:00 PM with a US Open Cup Qualifying game against the Real Colorado Foxes at the Tony Glavin Soccer Complex in St Charles.
Competing again in the Heartland Division of the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League (PDL) the Lions face the finest players in the Midwest. Yet expectations are high as President and Head Coach Tony Glavin features a team composed of local and international players.
“This year, we’re really focusing on our young players, giving them a chance to prove themselves against the highest competition,” said Glavin. “Our veterans will also share a burden but it’s the youngsters who are going to provide the excitement and energy that our teams have been known for. Overall we have a good mix of players. We still have a few players that have yet to be released from their college teams and we will bring them in as soon as possible.”
“We don’t want to get too excited about our prospects just yet,” said Glavin. “We know we’re going to be fast and very entertaining for the fans. How quickly our youngsters come along will tell the tale in the end. What must be remembered is that this is a level above the college game and it is very demanding. Everyone on the field has his eyes on the pros, the competition is stiff and there’s no easy way to make it but talent and hard work.”
Also new for 2010 season is the Monster Pit, a high energy seating section for fans to cheer, chant and revel sponsored by Monster Energy Drink. “The Monster Pit is really designed for our regular fans who attend wearing the green and wanting to be as loud as they possibly can,” said Jim Shipley, Lions General Manager.
“We have had some incredibly loyal and vocal fans and now they have a place to get together along with the newer fans who want to join the fun. Soccer in St Louis has really taken some major steps forward in the past five years and we look forward to continuing to add to that excitement.”
The Lions have already had an outstanding year in sponsorship development. “We’ve added Umbro as our equipment sponsor,” said Glavin, “and we now have Fast Lane Convenience Stores and Stations as our shirt sponsor. We’ve brought on board Monster Energy Drinks, Anheuser Busch, and many others, including a major new back shirt sponsor we’ll be announcing in a few days.”

ST. LOUIS LIONS DROP OPENER 2-0 TO REAL COLORADO FOXES
St Louis, MO...The St. Louis Lions lost 2-0 on a rainy evening and a soaked pitch against the Real Colorado Foxes. Colorado coming off a 1-1 draw Friday night against the Springfield Demize opened the scoring 3 minutes into the game when Pat Jemnis tapped in a ball on the back post off of a bumbling cross that bounced off two Lions defenders in front of the net.
The stunned Lions quickly regrouped and gained control of much of the first half and created plenty of chances but were unable to find the back of the net. Moments after the Colorado goal the Lions newcomer Aaron Brittian thought he earned the team a penalty kick when he was tackled from behind in the Colorado box. Instead the ball rolled out of bounds and the Lions were awarded a corner kick which they failed to connect on and the ball sailed inches over the crossbar. The Lions continued to control the flow of the game and much of the possession in the first half out shooting Colorado 8-3.
The rain soaked pitch came into play early in the 2nd half when Colorado struck again in the 47th minute as Colorado’s Steve Emery slipped past a sliding Lions defender and placed a shot passed goalkeeper Nate Thackery.
“We were very unfortunate today, I was very happy with our pace of play and how we were able to get in behind their defense and create as many chances as we did in the first half,” said Head Coach Tony Glavin. “We really put them under pressure. I was happy with our work effort considering the saturated field conditions. “
“We still have a lot of work to do this week to prepare for the two games this weekend against Des Moines and Rochester” said Glavin. “Give Colorado credit they defended well and were really organized. You could tell that they have had several games under their belt. “
The Lions hit the road this coming weekend with two US Open Cup qualifying matches against the Des Moines Menace on Saturday and the Rochester Thunder on Sunday. The Lions return home to conclude US Open Cup Qualifying on Saturday May 29th at 5:00PM vs the Springfield Demize.

ST LOUIS FALLS TO MENACE IN SECOND HALF ON A DISPUTED GOAL
Des Moines, IA....The St. Louis Lions lost their second consecutive game of the season on Saturday night against the Des Moines 2-1in front of 3,459 fans at Valley Stadium.
The game was a typical St Louis/Des Moines matchup as both teams battled hard and physical to try and control the midfield. The Lions Brian Harris picked up a yellow card for a rough tackle at midfield in the 20th minute. The Lions stepped up the pressure on the Menace and 4 minutes later Aaron Brittain played a pinpoint thru ball that sent Harris in on goal. Harris was one on one with the goal and found the back of the net. The Lions controlled much of the half and were confident going into halftime.
“I thought we played a very good first half and we were setting the tempo and tone of the game. Des Moines is always a tough place to play because of the crowd, the environment and the fact that they are always a quality team” said Glavin “Harris made a great run and has been playing very well it was good to see him score”
In the second half the Lions once again came out and were setting the pace and tone of the game but a disputed goal changed the tone of the game. In the 53rd minute Des Moines pressured the Lions wide of the 18 yard box and sent what appeared to be a lackluster cross at the top of the 18 yard box. Logan McDaniel of Des Moines was able to get a strike on the ball which hit the underside of the cross bar and dropped on goal line and bounced out to the 6 yard box where goalie Nate Thackery recovered the ball. The Assistant Referee was quick to call a goal. The Lions adamantly contested the call and after the game video replay confirmed that the ball never crossed the goal line.
The Lions were clearly rattled at the call and pressed hard to get back the lead and sent a shot wide of the Des Moines goal that deflected off a defender for a corner. On the ensuing corner Des Moines quickly countered and caught the Lions wide defenders pushed up creating a 3 v 2 situation where Stephen Okai sent Lebo Moloto long behind the Lions defense and into a 50/50 b all with Lions goalie Nate Thackery. Moloto won the challenge and scored into a wide open net to give the Menace the 2-1 lead. The Lions were pressing late in the game and in the closing seconds had a great shot by Gavin “Dodgy” Smith go off the top of the cross bar.
“The momentum changed after the first Des Moines goal and it really changed the complexity of the game, but we need to learn to keep our composure and play our game. The call forced us to put more pressure on ourselves to get the lead back and we lost our focus and shape. Des Moines did what any good team does and took advantage of it. We need to now focus on Rochester on Sunday, the remainder of the season and focus on qualifying for the playoffs”
The Lions continue this road trip with a 3:00pm game today against the Rochester Thunder in Rochester MN. Rochester is currently leading the Heartland Conference US Open Cup Qualifying with a 2-0-1 record. A Lions win will force a tie between Rochester and Des Moines for the Open Cup spot. The Lions return home to conclude US Open Cup Qualifying on Saturday May 29th at 5:00PM vs the Springfield Demize.

ST LOUIS RAINS ON THE ROCHESTER THUNDER HOME OPENER
Rochester, MN....The St. Louis Lions captured victory for the first time of the season in Rochester MN this afternoon with a 2-1 victory over the Thunder. The Lions came out firing as they scored 3 minutes into the game when Kenny Kranz struck a 30 yard drive over the Thunder keeper.
“The ball came to me and I got a touch on it to settle it and I looked up to see where the keeper was and he was out. The ball just bounced perfect so I hit it and we go up 1-nil. It was great to score and to start off that fast. We needed it as a team” said Kranz.
The Lions almost scored a gain moments later when Gavin “Dodgy” Smith sent a ball across the top of the 6 yard box and Jarius “Juice” Holmes knocked a ball just wide of the back post when he was hit from behind by a Rochester defender. The Lions were much more disciplined in their shape and attacking pressure in this game. It paid off midway thru the first half when Tyler Schaefering found Juice on a throw-in deep in the Rochester end. Juice one timed a ball past the diving Rochester keeper to put the Lions up for good.
“It is so good to get that goal and give us a little cushion” said Juice. “I am relieved to get the goal, it feels great to score.”
The Lions were coming off a tough game against Des Moines the night before and were bound to run out of gas at some point. Late in the half Kranz took down a Rochester player about 20 yards from goal. On the restart Rochester’s Christian Hernandez drilled the ball into the upper right corner cutting the Lions lead to 2-1.
“I was really pleased with our shape and the balance of our attack today. We really came out and set the tone early in this game. Our tackles were precise, we stuck in and everyone got behind the ball to defend. We played a full hard 90 today.” said Tony Glavin “It was great to end the road trip with a win and to put together a complete game. “
In the second half the Lions again came out attacking and pressured Rochester for much of the half. As the half wore on the Lions did begin to tire and they battled thru the fatigue and packed it in defensively leaving Brian Harris as the lone striker up top. Harris was relentless and at any opportunity he pushed forward and attacked the Rochester defense at one point taking on the Rochester defense on a 3 v 1 and ripped a shot just past the near post.
“Harris battled the entire weekend. He was a bull this weekend and really was a big difference maker in our attack” said Mike Poropat Lions Assistant Coach.
The Lions return home next Saturday May 29th at 5:00PM to take on the Springfield Demize in the first of three matchups against the Demize within the next week.. |

ATTACK HEATS UP AGAINST DEMIZE
St Louis, MO....The offense came to life for the St Louis Lions on a sweltering hot day. Four separate goal scorers got in on the action to defeat the Springfield Demize on Saturday afternoon. The Lions could have tallied a couple more had it not been for the outstanding play of Springfield goalie Nikolas Markos who made eleven saves on the evening.
The Lions continued on their trend of striking early by scoring in the first 3 minutes of the game. Jonny Brown served up a perfect ball, on a free kick, to Dan “Beano” Meagher who headed a ball near post for a 1-0 lead. Jonny Brown opened his own goal scoring account in the 38th minute when Lions goalie Nate Thackery drove a ball up field to Bean who flicked the ball past the Springfield defenders to a charging Jonny Brown who slotted the ball past the outstretched Springfield goalie Markos.
“I don’t know who you could credit as The Man of The Match Beano or Jonny?” said Head Coach Tony Glavin “Both players had excellent games and have really connected on the field. Guys are fighting for spots everyday and everyone is giving it their all. Making out the lineup is difficult because everyone is contributing. We have had seven different goal scorers in four games.”
The Lions went into the half with a 2-0 lead and outshooting Springfield 7 to1. The second half started much like the first half did with the Lions creating numerous opportunities. The Lions outshot Springfield 12 to 2 in the second half. Jonny Brown was once again involved in the scoring in the second half when he toe poked a ball to Tad Kreamalmeyer who cut the ball back at the top of the 18 and sent a lofted bending ball past the Springfield goalie.
The Lions capped off scoring in the 68th minute when Olly Dyson had a goal line finish after a Lions shot deflected off of several Springfield defenders.
“Markos was playing out of his head, he is a very good goalie and he was making some unbelievable saves. We have to play Springfield again on Wednesday and they will be ready for us.” said Mike Poropat Lions assistant coach.
The Lions improve to 2-2-0 on the season and will play the Demize two more times this week. St Louis travels midweek on Wednesday to take on the Demize in Springfield.
The Lions return home next Saturday June 5th at 5:00PM to take on the Springfield Demize The Lions announced late this past week that they will honor all St Louis Athletica tickets at the remaining Lions home games. Just exchange your Athletica ticket at the ticket office for a $5.00 Lions ticket.
